Aromi Cambridge: Cambridge’s Hidden Gems Foodie Finds Part 7

A slice of Sicily in Cambridge

Aromi Cambridge is a well loved favourite around the city by its locals and tourists, and now we know why! It’s a family owned, independent Sicilian Cafe, which serves a bit of everything. Whether you’re looking for a morning cappuccino and a croissant, a bite to eat for lunch with their homemade sourdough pizzas and sandwiches, or an evening sweet treat with their homemade gelato! Staying true to its Sicilian roots, Aromi proudly uses the Italian word ‘Caffè’ in its name. Its popularity speaks for itself, with queues often stretching out the door.

Authentic flavour, made by hand

What I love about Aromi Cambridge, is that everything is handmade with care by their skilled chefs. They make their pizzas and sandwiches fresh daily, beginning the process with dough fermentation. After 48 hours, we come to the day we’ve all been waiting for! The chefs start to assemble the freshly cooked dough, leaving the shop smelling amazing. It’s no coincidence that Good Food honoured them with a ‘Blue Ribbon’ in 2024.

They definitely know a thing or two about pizza because WOW, I was amazed. The pizza dough was soft, yet had a nice crisp crunch to it. I went for a piccante and it was full of flavour; the contrast between the sweet onions and salty spicy salami was a great combination.

If you’re not a meat lover or have dietary requirements, they have plenty of different choices to choose from. Margherita is always a popular choice, taking it back to basics with this classic. If you’re vegan or don’t like cheese, they have options for you too! You can choose between their caponata (my favourite) or zucchine, both still packed with flavour.

As well as their amazing pizzas, they also sell focaccia sandwiches which are equally as good. They don’t hold back on the fillings either, with the toppings oozing right out. Don’t be surprised if it gets a little messy! Again, they also have a plethora of options for different dietary requirements.

Want to try their delicious food but don’t have the time to sit and enjoy in store? You also have the choice to takeaway. You can choose to have your food heated on the spot, or take it home and pop it in the oven yourself. Deliveroo is always an option too.

A croissant filled with pistachio cream at Aromi Cambridge

A love letter to pistachio

For all the pistachio lovers out there, you will be in your absolute element because Aromi Cambridge has you covered. Give into your cravings with their thick, Sicilian pistachio hot chocolate, topped with cream and pistachio garnish (don’t worry, if pistachio isn’t your thing, they have a hazelnut and dark chocolate one too!).

Without fail, I go for the pistachio croissant, filled daily with their locally famous pistachio cream. And yes, you can buy this in a jar to use at home. Why not use it to recreate their indulgent torta pistachio, or just eat it out of the jar like I do!

If you’re more of a savoury lover, that’s absolutely fine. Treat yourself to one of their pistachio arancini’s with melt in the middle mozzarella, and trust me, it wont disappoint. They also sell jars of pistachio pesto, making cooking at home that bit easier and yummier. My personal favourite dish to make with it is a king prawn linguine.

Local charm with Italian warmth

Friendly staff welcome you as soon as you step into the shop, ready to answer questions and share their favourite picks. The cafe has a warm feel to it, mixing traditional Sicilian charm with modern elements. As Italian music plays in the background, it’s easy to forget you’re not actually in Sicily. They have a variety of table sizes, making sure to cater to all; also offering highchairs for the little ones. If it’s a sunny day, make the most of their outside seating.

Aromi Cambridge sits in a prime City Centre spot, just beyond the main hustle and bustle. It’s a great option for those strolling around the city offering a peaceful break in the middle of a busy day. It’s only a short walk away from attractions such as the Cambridge Colleges and the several beautiful parks that Cambridge has to offer. Why not grab a bite at Aromi before making your way to Let’s Go Punting for a scenic tour along the River Cam.

If you were wanting a later dinner or fancied some pasta, make sure to check out their other stores on Benet’s Street and Peas Hill.
