Firstly (and arguably most importantly), the best way to explore the city in a way that’s controlled, fun and informative, is by taking part in a guided punting tour along the college backs.
What are the College Backs?
The area around the River Cam, known as the ‘College Backs’, is a quintessential part of Cambridge. It’s home to seven University of Cambridge colleges, nine iconic bridges, and some of the most beautiful gardens in the city.
A guided punting tour along the college backs allows visitors of any group size to see the most iconic city sites from the river. As the area around the college Backs is privately owned by Cambridge University, there are many restrictions for visitors. Therefore, we always recommend a punting tour, as customers are always guaranteed access from the best seat in the city – the seat of a punt!

Cambridge University Explained (Without the Confusion)
Anyone planning a visit to Cambridge is likely to add the University to their itinerary. Not only is it one of the 4 oldest Universities in the world, but it is also a quintessential part of the city’s charming culture. However, navigating when, where, and how to structure a visit can sometimes be complicated.
The first thing to know is how Cambridge University is structured. In this blog, we will explain exactly that, in the hopes of providing you with a straightforward guide to Cambridge University life.
What Is the University of Cambridge?
Cambridge University was founded in 1209, making it one of the oldest universities in the world. However, unlike most universities, it is not a single campus. Instead, it is a collegiate university made up of 31 individual colleges.
Essentially, the University and its colleges have designated responsibilities.
- Cambridge University: sets courses, delivers lectures, and awards degrees.
- Cambridge University colleges: provide accommodation, dining, and small-group teaching called supervisions.
Therefore, every student belongs to both a department and a college. This dual structure often causes confusion. Think of it like Harry Potter: all students belong to Hogwarts (the University of Cambridge), but each student is also part of a specific house, such as Gryffindor or Slytherin, much like Cambridge students belong to individual colleges such as King’s or Trinity. Nevertheless, it is central to Cambridge’s identity.
Cambridge Colleges Explained
The Cambridge University Colleges operate independently. Moreover, each one has its own history, staff, and traditions.
All Cambridge University students apply to a specific college; however, all degrees are awarded by the University itself.
You may recognise famous colleges such as:
- King’s College
- Trinity College
- St John’s College
- Queen’s College
The colleges are dotted throughout Cambridge city centre, resulting in university culture being woven into everyday life.
What Are the College Backs?
Due to the transportation of goods along the River Cam, a lot of the Collages were positioned along the riverside. Therefore, a trip down the river can provide a magnificent showcase of the colleges for those interested in the full ‘Cambridge’ experience.
Collectively, these views are known as the College Backs.
Unfortunately, you can only see fragments of the buildings from the road; therefore, a guided tour along the College Backs is the perfect way to view sweeping lawns and historic bridges.
Cambridge University Museums and Traditions
As impressive as the collages are, it is important for visitors to also explore beyond them. The university is also home to countless museums and galleries, dedicated to science, art, and archaeology. These museums are collectively utilised to reflect the extraordinary breadth of subjects studied here, alongside the wide-ranging interests of its students. Most museums are free to enter, allowing visitors to engage directly with Cambridge University life.
Additionally, traditions remain an important part of student culture. Formal Hall dinners, academic gowns, and May Balls all continue today. Consequently, Cambridge blends historic ritual with modern academic study.
Why Cambridge Can Feel Confusing
Cambridge often feels complex because its buildings are not grouped in one area. Instead, its colleges, departments, and libraries are scattered across the city. Some areas are open to visitors. Others remain private during term time. Therefore, it can be difficult to understand what belongs to whom.
However, a trip down the college’s back will help any visitor understand the university system and how it operates.
Why Punting Helps You Understand Cambridge
Punting tours along the River Cam provide insight into several of the historical colleges, including King’s, St Johns, and Trinity. As you glide along the water, the relationship between the buildings becomes clearer.
Moreover, you see the College Backs exactly as they were designed to be viewed. Instead of navigating narrow streets, visitors can experience the architecture in one uninterrupted stretch. This makes the University’s structure feel logical rather than confusing.
Punting tours are as informative as they are relaxing, but why take our word for it? Here are some reviews left by visitors:
‘Ryan was a great guide! We were lucky enough to have a glorious sunny afternoon and a wealth of wildlife to entertain us. With his extensive knowledge of the history of Cambridge (as well as some stories of alumni), we found out so much. The punting itself was smooth, and we managed to avoid amateur punters, enjoying a smooth ride. Would recommend!’ – Vicky
‘Callum was a great tour guide, relaxed, informative and very amusing. Thoroughly enjoyed his guide along the River Cam. Highly recommended.’ – Julie
Frequently Asked Questions

How many colleges are in Cambridge?
There are a total of 31 colleges that form the University of Cambridge.
What are the College Backs?
The College Backs are the riverside gardens and rear views of several historic colleges.

Proposal Punting
If you’re looking for a truly romantic and unforgettable way to pop the question, a punting proposal with Let’s Go Punting offers the perfect setting. Glide along the River Cam surrounded by Cambridge’s most iconic sights, enjoy peaceful moments on the water, and choose a backdrop that makes your engagement story completely unique to you. To make it a truly special and seamless experience, we have created a simple guide for you below.
Choose The Perfect Date & Time
Before anything else, you’ll want to think about your ideal date and time. For a proposal, we strongly recommend booking a Private Tour for 2. This gives you exclusive use of the boat, meaning it’s just the two of you and your chauffeur. You’ll have privacy for the big moment and the flexibility to pause for photos and soak it all in.
For the most romantic atmosphere, we suggest either an early morning or evening tour. These quieter times ensure the river isn’t too busy, creating a relaxed and personal setting for your proposal.
Pick Your Proposal Spot
One of the most exciting parts of planning your punting proposal is choosing where to ask the question.
Some of the most popular and picturesque locations include:
- Bridge of Sighs
- King’s College Chapel
- New Court, St John’s College
- Mathematical Bridge
We recommend looking at Google Images from the river perspective to help you visualise the moment. Each location offers a slightly different atmosphere, whether it’s dramatic architecture, iconic Cambridge history, or a secluded romantic feel.
You’ll also want to decide whether to propose on the outward journey or on the way back. Some people love building anticipation before the big moment, while others prefer to ask early and enjoy the rest of the tour celebrating together.
Add Food, Drinks & Flowers
To make the experience even more special, you can enhance your tour with food and drinks add-ons. Find out more here. You’re also welcome to bring your own if you’d prefer something personal.
For an extra romantic touch, we offer a bouquet of red roses at an additional cost, or you can provide your own flowers. We can discreetly hide them in the boat ready for the proposal, or have them waiting for you at the end of your tour.
Capture The Moment
A proposal deserves to be remembered forever.
At no extra charge, your chauffeur will happily take photos and videos on your phone to capture the exact moment you ask the question.
If you’d prefer a professional photographer, you have two options:
- Have them join you on your boat
- Arrange for them to travel on a separate boat ahead of you, staying out of sight until the big moment
If booking a separate boat for a photographer, this would be charged as an additional Private Tour for 2, alongside your own booking.
Get In Touch And Secure Your Booking
Once you’ve thought through the details, the final step is to get in touch. We recommend either calling to discuss your proposal plans or emailing us with all the details. Some couples prefer to book their boat online first and then contact us, while others reach out beforehand so we can arrange everything and send over an invoice with a secure, clickable payment link.
When the moment arrives, all that’s left to do is take a deep breath, get down on one knee, and enjoy a “yes” you’ll remember forever.
Hidden Architectural Gems You Can Only See from the River Cam
Cambridge is a city unlike any other. With its Gothic architecture, picturesque bridges and world-famous colleges, it’s hard to ignore its beauty. However, many of the hidden gems on the River Cam remain tucked away from the typical tourist’s view. The city is home to a plethora of architectural details, each one holding its own story and anecdote. These hidden sights on the River Cam are visible only from the seat of a punt.
Known to few, the land surrounding the River Cam is owned by the University of Cambridge. As a result, many of the city’s most striking details remain hidden from both tourists and locals—unless they are on the river. Punting along the College Backs offers a sublime and truly unique perspective. This experience simply cannot be matched on foot. In this blog, we will explore the hidden details along the river that bring Cambridge’s traditions to life. Alongside this, we will underpin some of the most captivating stories shared on our punting tours.
Where Every Bridge Tells a Story
Bridge of Sighs
The Bridge of Sighs is one of Cambridge’s most iconic landmarks, setting the bar high as the first bridge on our tour and offering a rare view unavailable to the general public. Its original name was the ‘New Bridge’ until Queen Victoria formulated her own name for it. It is claimed that she believed it to resemble Venice’s Bridge of Sighs, prompting the change. Although the resemblance is debatable, no one dared correct the Queen, and the name stuck!
Its name is said to mirror the expressions of students as they cross the bridge on their way to the examination hall, a moment often observed from the punts passing beneath.
The Bridge of Sighs’ fame skyrocketed in 1963 after students punted a 1928 Austin Seven down the river using four tied-together punts. They then hoisted the car under the bridge overnight without detection. Don’t believe us? Here’s the proof: Cambridge News.
The Curious Detail Hidden in Clare Bridge
Built between 1639 and 1640 by Thomas Grumbold and restored in 1969, Clare Bridge is the oldest bridge on the College backs. However, ironically, it is still incomplete. If you look closely enough, one of the 14 stone balls decorating the bridge has a wedge piece missing. Folklaw says Grumbold mismeasured the river, resulting in a very obvious, uneven arch. The college, in response, withheld full payment. The architect definitely removed a section of the stone to balance the shortfall. The whereabouts of this missing slice is still a mystery to all but Grumbold.
Kings Bridge
One of the historically darker bridges along the river, King’s Bridge is known for its dated forms of reconciliation. Built by Francis Braidwood in 1819, this bridge was one of the last locations in England where duels to the death were legally permitted. This reveals a darker side of Cambridge’s history, where certain outdated traditions lingered far longer than one might expect.
College Facades & Hidden Features
A Hidden River Cam Detail: Benedict Spinola’s Head
Some hidden sights on the River Cam have a much bigger backstory. Just outside Las Iguanas on Quayside, a water-spouting gargoyle looms ominously along the riverside. The face is said to depict Benedict Spinola, a 16th-century banker who swindled the college out of property in London. Over 400 years later, in 1989, the makers of Spitting Image created the head as a tongue-in-cheek revenge. This is a detail only visible from the river.
The Doorway You Only Notice from the Water: New Court’s Back Entrance
Along St John’s College stands an incongruous wooden door leading straight to the river’s edge. Originally used for collecting goods transported from the river, rumour has it that nowadays, current university students disguise it as a fire exit in order to trick freshers into running through it during alarm tests.
St John’s New Court Clock Tower
This next detail is easy to miss as you drift along the river: the clock tower that famously has no clock. A long-standing rivalry between Trinity and St John’s decreed that whichever college finished its tower first would earn the right to install a chiming clock. Trinity won by quietly cheating, throwing up a temporary wooden tower first. This left St John’s with a permanent reminder of defeat. The absence is still visible from your punt today.
President’s Lodge
The President’s Lodge is a stately riverside building steeped in history. It also reveals a hidden story if you look closely. Higher up, several windows were bricked over in the 1600s to avoid the infamous window tax. This was a peculiar levy that literally encouraged homeowners to shut out the light, giving rise to the phrase “daylight robbery.”
Insider Tips for Discovering Hidden Gems on the River Cam
To fully appreciate these hidden sights on the River Cam, don’t hesitate to ask your chauffeur to point them out as you glide past. Punting may be leisurely, but it’s important to keep hands and arms inside the punt, especially on busy summer days, when the river can become surprisingly crowded.
For the best experience, early-morning or late-evening trips are quieter and more immersive. These times are ideal for photo opportunities or simply soaking up Cambridge’s historic nature.

This or That: Punting Edition
This or That – Punting edition, but which way should you do it? With so many options, it’s easy to wonder which punting experience is actually right for you. Shared or private? Guided or self-hire? The iconic College Backs or a quieter trip towards Grantchester? And is Cambridge punting really better than Oxford?
In this blog, we’ll break down the most common punting choices and help you decide what suits your plans best. Whether you’re visiting for the first time, celebrating something special, or just want to relax and enjoy the view. The right punting choice turns a good trip into an unforgettable one, and Let’s Go Punting makes it easy.
Shared Tours vs Private Tours
Shared punting is ideal for those wanting a cost-friendly outing. You’ll share the punt with other guests, making it a sociable experience and a great way to meet fellow visitors. It’s usually the best-cost option and perfect if you’re happy to sit back and enjoy the ride with others.
Private punting gives you the boat entirely to yourselves. It’s the best choice for special occasions, romantic trips, or anyone wanting a quieter, more personal experience. With extra privacy, you’ll have more flexibility and better photo opportunities.
At Let’s Go Punting, you can choose shared or private chauffeured tours along the iconic College Backs, all with comfortable raised seating and expert guides. With live availability, no long queues, and the option to customise private tours with picnics or drinks, you’re guaranteed a smooth, stress-free experience, whatever you choose.
Guided vs Self-hire Tours
Guided or chauffeured punting is all about sitting back and enjoying the experience. Your expert chauffeur does the hard work, smoothly navigating the River Cam while sharing stories, history, and fun facts about the colleges and bridges you pass along the way. It’s stress-free, informative, and perfect if you want to see Cambridge at its best.
With self-hire punting, you’re in control, steering and poling the punt yourself. It can be a fun, hands-on experience, but for first-timers it often involves a learning curve, a bit of effort, and the occasional awkward moment when navigating busy stretches of the river.
With Let’s Go Punting, every tour is fully chauffeured, so you can sit back and enjoy the ride while an experienced guide takes care of everything. Enjoy beautiful views, great stories, and a stress-free way to see Cambridge.
College Backs vs Grantchester
The College Backs route is the classic Cambridge punting experience. You’ll glide past seven historic colleges and under nine beautiful bridges, taking in some of the city’s most famous sights. It’s the best option for history, architecture, and unforgettable photo opportunities, including views of King’s College Chapel and the Bridge of Sighs.
Punting towards Grantchester offers a longer, more countryside-focused journey, with open green spaces and a peaceful atmosphere. This route is often chosen by self-punting groups looking for a more hands-on, nature-led experience and isn’t currently available on chauffeured tours.
Let’s Go Punting specialises in the iconic College Backs route, delivering the most scenic and memorable way to experience Cambridge. Our fully chauffeured tours are expertly curated to showcase the best landmarks, including unique views that can only be seen from the river.
Cambridge Punting vs Oxford Punting
Cambridge is famous worldwide for its historic river route past the university’s iconic colleges. The experience is structured, guided, and packed with stories as you glide along the River Cam.
Oxford is also steeped in punting tradition, but the experience can vary more widely. Many trips are self-drive or less guided, making it more of a DIY activity that can feel more challenging for beginners.
If you want the best guided college punting experience with insight, comfort, and ease, Cambridge, and specifically Let’s Go Punting, offers a more enjoyable and informative journey than the typical self-punt options you often find elsewhere.
How to make your mind up?
Your punting choices shape the whole experience, shared or private, guided or self-hire, College Backs or Grantchester. Cambridge or Oxford also changes the vibe completely. For the easiest, most iconic, and most enjoyable river experience, a guided tour with Let’s Go Punting wins. Through fundraising efforts, and open conversations within our team, this partnership reflects our belief that positive experiences help build stronger communities.
One of the most heart-warming moments of Let’s Go Punting’s 2025 was Carols on the River. We held the event in support of Little Miracles on 7th December 2025.. Guests enjoyed a magical afternoon gliding along the River Cam, whilst the St John the Evangelist Choir sang beloved Christmas carols. We were delighted to raise £1,370 for Little Miracles. This supported families in Cambridge with children facing additional needs or life-limiting conditions. This moment is a standout highlight in Let’s Go Punting’s 2025 journey.
Giving back always remains an important part of what we do. Over the course of the year, we donated numerous punting vouchers to charity raffles, and community events. These donations supported fundraising efforts across Cambridge and beyond, while also introducing new guests to the experience of punting on the River Cam. We gave to the likes of – Norfolk Accident Rescue Service, Macmillan Cancer Support, Cambridge Acorn Project, Gretton School, and many more.
Throughout 2025, we made and maintained valuable connections with local affiliates across Cambridge. Our partnerships with local business providers allowed us to offer visitors more tailored and memorable experiences. Some of these include The Varisty Hotel, Cambridge Gift shop and Tour Tailors.
Celebrating Excellence
We are incredibly proud that Let’s Go Punting has once again been recognised among the country’s best visitor attractions. In the latest VisitEngland Quality Assured Visitor Attraction assessment, we achieved an outstanding 98% overall score. This marks our second consecutive year receiving the VisitEngland Gold Accolade and improves on last year’s already impressive result.
This recognition reflects the dedication of our entire team. From our chauffeurs on the river to the staff working behind the scenes, as well as the continued support of our customers. As a proud Cambridge-based business with many years of experince, this award reinforces our commitment to delivering exceptional, high-quality punting experiences on the River Cam and inspires us to continue raising the bar.
Memorable Events On The River
Our Punt & Hunt experiences returned across multiple seasons this year, with themed booklets for Easter, Halloween, and Christmas. While each version was tailored to the time of year, the magic remained the same. They transformed a traditional punting tour into an interactive adventure for children. Young guests were encouraged to spot landmarks, solve clues, and explore the River Cam in a fun and engaging way. At the end of each Punt & Hunt, children received a prize, adding an extra layer of excitement and ensuring smiles long after the tour had ended.
Valentine’s Day was once again a romantic highlight on the River Cam. Couples enjoyed a private, chauffeured punting tour along the College Backs, complete with a complimentary red rose for bookings made in advance. The experience offered a peaceful and intimate way to celebrate. Optional add-ons such as Prosecco, Champagne, picnics, and bouquets made the moment even more special.
The May Ball season is always one of the most spectacular times on the river, and 2025 was no exception. Punting during the celebrations allowed guests to enjoy incredible views of fireworks, music, and iconic Cambridge traditions. Experiencing the May Ball fireworks from the River Cam definitely needs to be added to your bucket list! Make sure to purchase your tickets early, as they sell out quickly.
Adding an atmospheric twist to the autumn season, our Halloween Ghost Tours offered guests a chance to experience Cambridge after dark. This year marked the first time we hosted this spooky event. It featured eerie tales, hidden histories, and spine-tingling stories. It brought a mysterious and unforgettable experience to the River Cam.
A major milestone for Let’s Go Punting’s 2025 came on 12th July, which marked our busiest tour day of the year. With the river buzzing with activity and a full schedule of tours, it was a clear reflection of the growing popularity of our experiences and the dedication of our entire team. We managed to host an amazing 100 tours, making it a personal record!
Looking Forward to 2026
Looking ahead to 2026, we’re excited and grateful for everything the year will bring. After a year of growth, community support, and unforgettable moments on the River Cam, we’re more motivated than ever. Thank you to everyone who joined us in 2025. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2026 for another incredible year of punting on the River Cam!

With cosy blankets, joyful singing, and lots of smiling faces, it was a truly magical evening for all ages. And for a wonderful cause too!
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our guests, we are so proud to share that we raised £1,370 for Little Miracles, Cambridge. We are also delighted to be donating an extra £250 to the St John’s Evangelist Choir, who filled the river with festive music and Christmas spirit.
A Magical Christmas Experience on the River

Supporting Little Miracles, Cambridge
At the heart of this event was our shared wish to support Little Miracles. This charity is doing extraordinary work for local families during incredibly difficult times. Every ticket sold helped us reach a fantastic total of £1,370. We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed.
