This bustling new addition to the Cambridge Foodie scene is a welcome change. Byron’s Bear here in Cambridge has sparked new life into our corner of the city.
Beer Garden Galore at Byron’s Bear
If you know Brits, you’ll know that we flock to beer gardens in mass at the first indication of being blessed with a warm evening. Whether we fancy it or not, we are determined to wash down a portion of chips with a pint once it hits 20°. Perhaps it’s the ever-present fear that there are few hot days in stock for us this season. With potentially so few bright days, we commit to taking full advantage of every opportunity we get to bask in the sun.
That is exactly why a pub must boast an impressive beer garden. Byron’s Bear has the benefit of being situated in a gorgeous location (and not just because they are next to us…)

Jesus Green – perfect for a family picnic and only metres away from our location!
The open space of Jesus Green means that beer garden dwellers can enjoy the sun from all angles. And not only that, the refreshing views of Jesus Green are a joy to drink in – alongside a pint! The illustrious River Cam also sits just on the perimeter of Byron’s Bear. Watch the punt boats float by, and if you fancy a tour, you know who to call…
Indulgent portions at Byron’s Bear
For those of us trying to watch what we eat, you might want to close your eyes in Byron’s Bear. Ignorance is bliss. A generous plate of pub grub is warranted every so often.
We kicked things off with hash brown bites and cheese fondue — a start that felt like a culinary hug. Think of the type of food that makes you want to curl up on the sofa dreamily – it was just that. It was impossible not to mop up the last of it with the remaining chunks of bread. And with that last bite, it was time to be presented with the mains.
When selecting from the menu, we couldn’t resist the mussels. They arrived served in a piping hot pot, resting in a creamy bath of broth with a vibrant wedge of lemon. And of course, the chunk of bread provided was used to sponge up as much flavour as possible. When you try Byron’s Bear yourself, certainly keep an eye out for the mussels.
The team and interior at Byron’s Bear
Setting up a functional team from scratch, with hungry customers to tend to, is a tall order. However, you could sense the enthusiasm from the staff to get to know each other, and the establishment itself. Although Byron’s Bear was just as new to the staff as it was to us, they took it in their stride. Everyone we encountered was warm and friendly, clearly eager to help and excited about the new venture. With time, the team will no doubt find their rhythm and refine the flow of service. It’s early days. And, there’s something quite charming about seeing the beginnings of what’s sure to become a well-loved local spot.
The decor had a traditional charm with playful modern touches. For instance, the vinyl corner, with records for customers to select from, pulled us away from our table to appreciate the hidden details inside the venue. One cosy corner was stocked with books. Another shelf had a variety of inviting games. And as always, the warm lighting produced a comfortable atmosphere. Therefore, it’s easy to conclude that the decor ticked all the right boxes – and then some.
The perfect destination
Conveniently located next to our punting location, Byron’s Bear is perfect for a pre-punting pick-me-up. Say you’ve found yourself so excited for your bespoke punting tour that you arrive half an hour early, Byron’s Bear will host you for a drink before the adventure begins on The Cam. Or, after your peaceful journey along the College Backs, gliding past historic architecture and under iconic bridges, you may wish to toast the experience. And there’s no better place to do so than back at Byron’s Bear. Whether warming up with a drink beforehand or winding down after the river, it’s the perfect complement to your punting adventure. It’s an easy recipe for a successful day out – no question.
An afternoon at the pub is always a win. Great food. Cold drinks. Good company. What more could you want? Well, add punting into the mix and it gets even better. Punting and pubbing— it’s quintessentially Cambridge.
