May Ball Week

Cambridge May Ball Week is back for 2022

The Cambridge annual may balls’ week is finally back again. If you are wondering what the fuss is all about, well the May week is pretty much the snazziest time of the year in Cambridge. The glam, the outfits, and the grand sparkly fireworks. We like to think it is a celebration for the start of summer but it is actually a toast to the end of the university year. The difference this time is that the balls are back after they had been put on hold for the past two years due to COVID-19 restrictions. Everyone in our office at let’s go punting is super excited for it!

What are the May balls?

They mark the end of the academic year lushious parties at Cambridge university.  Every college has its own ball but the most extravagant ones are Trinity and St John’s.  The parties are meant to end the year on a high note because as the saying goes study hard, party harder.  Nonetheless, the planning starts early on.  The students get to fancy up and enjoy a myriad of performances and entertainment throughout the night with endless food and drinks. More importantly, they enjoy the dashing fireworks. All of these amenities do not come at a cheap price though, the tickets are quite expensive with an average £300 per ticket. The awe-inspiring events usually have a theme which is not disclosed until the due date.

One of the fascinating aspects to the May balls is that they are organized by students for students.  Attending the ball definitely feels magical. However, Planning them is certainly monumental.

When are they?

Even though it is called The May week, it is set in June.  We understand how confusing that can be! The planning starts way ahead to make sure that everything is up notch.

Trinity’s May Ball will be held on Monday, the 20th of June 2022. While St. John’s will be held the day after on Tuesday, the 21st of June, 2022.  There is an underlying rivalry between both colleges on which one has the most glamorous ball out of the other. The one with the most dazzling firework display usually is crowned the winner of the night. So you better mark your calendars for these evenings as they are not to be missed!

What does that mean? You might ask!

Well, Grand firework displays.  You don’t have to attend the parties to enjoy some of the glam.  And Lucky for us, Colleges are constantly trying to outdo themselves every year and there has not been fireworks for two years, so you can imagine how crazy it is going to be this year. it is definitely not something to miss if you are in Cambridge.

If you are looking for ideas on how to spend those nights, I suggest you plan a date night or a night out with family and friends on a punting tour.

May Balls punting

We love punting down river cam but punting during the may balls’ fireworks is an experience like no other. The tour feels so spectacular like a scene out of a romantic movie. Imagine sitting on a boat on the river Cam. Whilst watching the fireworks sparkling Cambridge skies.  It surely is dreamy!

I believe this is the best way to experience the fireworks on these starry nights.  I without question recommend booking a punting tour during the may balls. Especially since everyone has high expectations for this year’s parties. So we are all wondering what kind of extravagant comeback they have in store.
