May Ball Fireworks

What are the May Ball Fireworks?

If there’s one thing that captures the magic of summer in Cambridge, it’s the May Ball fireworks. Each June, the city lights up in a spectacular celebration that combines centuries-old tradition with a show of colour, music, and jubilation. And there’s no better seat in the house than from a punt on the River Cam!

May Balls are famous end-of-year celebrations hosted by Cambridge University colleges. While the name suggests May, the events traditionally take place in June after exam season. Think black tie, live music, champagne, dancing until dawn—and, of course, breathtaking midnight fireworks.

Some of the most anticipated displays come from Trinity and St John’s Colleges, which launch their dazzling shows on the 23rd and 24th of June, respectively. These two nights are beloved by locals and visitors alike. Watch as the sky over the College Backs transforms into a glittering canvas, with gasps of admiration with each bang and pop.

Now remember: there are no toilet facilities to use when out on the river! Feel free to enjoy a bottle of fizz, a flask of hot chocolate, or whatever takes your fancy, but there are no toilets available during the experience.

What if it rains? A little bit of rain won’t stop us – so wrap up for the weather! A shower of rain won’t stop us from having a lovely night on The Cam.
