Rainy Days are Back – Is Summer 2018 Over?

We hear people complaining on the bus and in crowded supermarkets about the weather every day. This summer, we’ve experienced extreme heatwaves across Europe that caused hot and dry weather in the UK as well as in many other countries.

According to the Independent, hot weather in summer – even in the UK – is normal, and it tends to be broken up with occasional rainfalls. However, from early-June to mid-July, the UK underwent their driest summer in modern records.

Apart from feeling the heat and having difficulties with sleeping in our hot bedrooms at night, there were other visual signs of the hot summer days and nights; due to dryness, the grass turned into yellow and the ground cracked in several places. We realised that the characteristic green colour that covered the historical College Gardens faded and started to melt into the colour of the Colleges walls. The situation became so serious that we even played with the thought of what would happen if the River Cam ran dry.

This week, it looks like the unusual hot days are over; according to the latest weather forecast, there will be frequent showers in Cambridge and the expected maximum temperature is going to be around 25°C.

Do we still run our tours in the rain? The answer is YES! We understand all the adventages of rainwater, but it can’t destroy the punting spirit!

We think that singing and dancing in the rain is fun; why would it be different when it comes to punting?

Don’t worry,  this week’s weather doesn’t mean the official end of summer 2018. Sunny days are back from next week, so you can enjoy our tours without our blankets and umbrellas provided on board!

Celebrate summer with us on the greatest summer punting event called Music on The River! The event will take place in a week from today’s date (17th August), starting at 7.30pm. There will be some amazing live music played by Paul McCaffrey while gliding along the famous College Backs. Total fun and relaxation!

Punting and live music together? Couldn’t wish for more!
